If your teen or young adult has been diagnosed with POTS, you know this can be about so much more than dizziness or a racing heart.
You may have watched a kid who was active, independent, and doing everything they loved suddenly struggle to make it through a school day. Standing up can feel exhausting. Sports and activities get put on hold. Brain fog makes concentrating difficult. And plans sometimes depend entirely on how their body feels that day.
As a parent, one of the hardest parts is watching all of this happen while still feeling like you don’t fully understand why their body is having such a hard time regulating.
You’ve probably heard about increasing fluids and salt, compression garments, medications, exercise programs, and learning to change positions more slowly. Those strategies can be important parts of POTS management—but you may still be wondering:
What is happening underneath all of these symptoms?
At Live Better Chiropractic, that’s where we want to look deeper.
POTS is closely connected to the autonomic nervous system—the part of the nervous system responsible for automatically helping regulate things like heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, temperature, and the body’s response to stress.
So rather than looking at each symptom as a separate problem, we want to better understand how well that foundational system is functioning and adapting.
This article is for parents whose teen or young adult has been diagnosed with POTS—or who is experiencing unexplained dizziness, rapid heart rate, fatigue, brain fog, or exercise intolerance—and wants to better understand the nervous system connection and how supporting overall neurological regulation may fit alongside the care they’re already receiving.
Tommi’s Story
Tommi was a wildly active, athletic 17-year-old — riding horses, cheering, an A-B student with her whole life ahead of her. Then POTS hit.
Her mom described it best on her intake paperwork: massive fatigue that kept Tommi in bed all day, migraines and brain fog that made schoolwork impossible for weeks at a time, tachycardia, low blood pressure, chest pain, insomnia, anxiety, and depression. She couldn’t even walk to the bathroom without passing out. Her entire junior year — gone.
Tommi’s family did what most families do first: they tried the standard POTS approach. And when nothing worked, they kept searching for real answers.
That search led them to Neurologically-Focused Chiropractic Care. Slowly, then rapidly, Tommi came back to life. Today she’s headed to college on scholarship, back to cheering and riding, and planning to become a nervous system chiropractor herself.
Her story isn’t unique. It just took the right lens to find it.
POTS Is a Nervous System Problem, Not a Mystery
POTS affects an estimated 1 to 3 million Americans, most of them young women. Diagnosis requires a heart rate jump of 30+ beats per minute within 10 minutes of standing — but the symptoms go far beyond a fast heartbeat. Dizziness, brain fog, migraines, GI issues, and more all show up in the same picture.
The real driver is dysautonomia — an imbalance in the Autonomic Nervous System. Studies have found that quality of life for POTS patients is often comparable to that of people on kidney dialysis. This is not “in their head.” It’s in their neurospinal system and their vagus nerve.
The Vagus Nerve Holds the Answers
The vagus nerve runs from the brainstem through the entire body, regulating heart rate, blood pressure, and digestion along the way. When it’s stuck in a state of subluxation — neurological interference — it simply can’t do its job.
Up to 50% of POTS patients show signs of Neuropathic POTS tied to autonomic nerve dysfunction. Without vagal balance, the sympathetic “fight or flight” system stays stuck in overdrive. That’s why heart rate spikes, blood pressure drops, and symptoms flare with the smallest change in position, temperature, or stress.
Restoring vagal tone is the missing piece most POTS care programs skip entirely.
The “Perfect Storm” Behind Your Child’s POTS
POTS rarely comes from one single cause. It’s usually the tipping point after several stressors stack on top of each other over the years:
- Birth trauma — interventions like forceps, vacuum extraction, or C-section can strain the brainstem area
- Viruses and infections — mono, Lyme disease, and COVID-19 can inflame and damage the vagus nerve
- Autoimmune overlap — conditions like Ehlers-Danlos and MCAS often show up alongside POTS
- Chronic stress and trauma — which keep the sympathetic nervous system locked in overdrive
- Poor posture and “text neck” — constant strain on the delicate nerves of the upper neck
Each layer builds on the last. By the time POTS symptoms appear, your child’s nervous system has often been absorbing stress for years.
What Standard POTS Care Misses
Increasing salt intake and changing positions slowly can help manage symptoms in the moment, but they don’t address the root cause. Medications may manage heart rate, but they don’t restore autonomic balance. Cardiology testing tracks numbers, but it doesn’t map neurological function.
Without ever measuring the nervous system itself, care remains reactive rather than restorative — and families end up trying more of the same, hoping something finally works.
The neurospinal system is the missing lens.
A Neurological Path Forward
This is where INSiGHT Scans change the conversation. These scans measure autonomic function objectively — using sEMG, HRV, and neuroTHERMAL technology — to pinpoint exactly where subluxation and dysautonomia are showing up in your child’s nervous system.
From there, Neurologically-Focused Chiropractic Care works to restore balance to the Autonomic Nervous System and vagus nerve. Care plans are built around each child’s unique scan patterns and history, and progress is tracked over time — not guessed at.
Alongside care, simple daily foundations still matter: hydration, electrolytes, quality sleep, and movement all support the healing process.
Your Child Deserves Real Answers
Tommi’s story isn’t unique, but it took the right approach to unlock her healing. If your teen or young adult is struggling with POTS symptoms, they deserve more than “we don’t really know” and a shaker of salt. They deserve real answers rooted in how the nervous system actually works.
You don’t have to keep guessing, and you don’t have to accept “we don’t know” as the final word. Your child’s nervous system is trying to tell you something — and for the first time, there’s a way to actually listen to it.
